Marsa Matrouh
Is Marsa Matrouh right for my client?
Marsa Matrouh is a town on Egypt's western Mediterranean coast, known for some of the whitest sand and clearest water on the whole shore, in coves like Cleopatra Beach and Agiba.
It is a summer coast, known mainly to Egyptian holidaymakers, and quiet out of season. For international clients it works best as a night or two between Alexandria, El Alamein and Siwa, which lies about 300 km to the south.
- Cleopatra Beach
- Agiba Beach
- Rommel's Cave
- Matrouh lagoon
The Coves & the Cave
A coast of white limestone and water in every shade of blue.
Cleopatra Beach
A cove of rock formations west of the town, with a natural pool in the rock known as Cleopatra’s Bath.
Agiba Beach
A small cove reached by steps down the cliff, its water shading from turquoise to deep blue. The name means “miracle”.
Rommel’s Cave
A cave in the rock by the harbour, associated with Rommel’s headquarters in the desert war, now a small museum.
A Stop on the Western Road
Best as a pause between the Mediterranean and the desert.
Marsa Matrouh is where the coast road meets the road south to Siwa, which makes it the natural night between Alexandria and the oasis. In summer it adds a day on some of the loveliest beaches in Egypt.
Out of season it is quiet, and many of its hotels close. We brief it honestly: for clients who want a Mediterranean beach stay in its own right, El Alamein and New Alamein offer more.
