The PeopleEgyptologists and specialist guides

Does Triways provide Egyptologist guides, not just tour guides?

Yes. Triways arranges private Egyptologist guides for the sites your client visits, matched to the journey and to the person.

The guide is chosen for what your client wants to understand, not assigned from a list. For a particular interest, the guide is chosen for that subject too.

Seeing, and understanding

Expert Guiding as a Capability, Not a Given

Every itinerary promises “guided visits”. The guide decides whether your client sees a temple or understands it.

Most of what a client remembers about Egypt’s sites comes through one person: the one standing next to them. A guide who can read a relief, place a king in his century and explain why this wall matters more than the next turns a visit into an understanding. One who recites the same facts to every group does not.

That is why guiding is treated here as a capability to be planned, not a line in the inclusions. The guide is chosen for the client, briefed on the journey, and handed on between cities as part of one plan.

What “Expert” Means Here

Every Egypt operator says its guides are experts. This is what the word means when we use it.

  1. Knowledge

    Egyptologist

A guide trained in Egyptology, whose knowledge of ancient Egypt goes past a site’s headline facts: the history, the reading of reliefs and inscriptions, and how one place connects to the next. In Egypt, guiding at the sites is a licensed profession.

  2. A particular interest

    Specialist

For a theme beyond the pharaonic sites, the guide is chosen for the subject: Coptic and Islamic Cairo, a faith group’s sites, a school or university syllabus. See Culture & Heritage and SMERF.

  3. Theirs alone

    Private

A private guide stays with your client or their group, not a shared coach, so the pace, the questions and the time spent at each place are theirs to set.

  4. Handed on, not dropped

    Continuity

Where a journey has a guide in each region, the next guide knows who is arriving, what they have already seen and what they came for, so nothing is repeated and nothing is missed.

How Guides Are Matched to the Brief

The same temple, explained to two different clients, should not sound the same.

Four things in the brief decide the guide: what your client wants to understand, the pace they travel at, the language they are most comfortable in, and the places on the route. A first-time visitor and a client on their third journey to Egypt need different guiding at the same site.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Triways' guides licensed Egyptologists, or standard tour guides?

Triways arranges private Egyptologist guides for the sites a client visits: guides whose knowledge is of ancient Egypt, chosen for the journey. In Egypt, guiding at the sites is a licensed profession. If a particular credential matters to your client, raise it in the brief and we will confirm the guide against it.

What's the difference between a standard tour guide and an Egyptologist?

In Egyptian travel, an Egyptologist guide is one trained in Egyptology, whose knowledge of ancient Egypt goes beyond a site’s headline facts: the history, the reading of reliefs and inscriptions, and how one place relates to another. The same word also describes academic specialists who study and excavate. A standard guide may know a route well; an Egyptologist guide explains what the client is looking at.

Can a client keep the same guide for the whole journey?

It depends on the route. Some journeys suit one guide throughout; others are better served by a guide in each region, handed on with a briefing so that nothing is repeated. Say which your client prefers in the brief.

Can a guide be arranged in my client's language?

Name the language your client is most comfortable in when you send the brief, and we will confirm a guide for it for the dates.

Can guides lead a particular interest, beyond the pharaonic sites?

Yes. For a theme such as Coptic or Islamic Cairo, a group’s study programme or a faith group’s sites, the guide is chosen for that subject as well as for the client.
