El Alamein
What is El Alamein known for?
El Alamein is on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, about 100 km west of Alexandria. In 1942 the desert here saw the two battles of El Alamein, a turning point of the Second World War in North Africa, and the war cemeteries and memorials of the nations who fought are still tended on the coast.
Along the same shore, New Alamein is a new resort city of towers, beaches and marinas, the heart of the summer North Coast.

The Battlefield & Its Memorials
A quiet coast that holds one of the defining stories of the Second World War.
The El Alamein War Cemetery
The Commonwealth War Cemetery, its rows of headstones set in the desert above the sea, with a memorial to those who have no known grave. For many visitors it is a personal pilgrimage.
The German & Italian Memorials
West along the coast, the German memorial, built like a desert fortress, and the white tower of the Italian memorial, each honouring its nation’s dead.
The El Alamein War Museum
Uniforms, weapons, maps and vehicles from the North African campaign, which set the battlefield in context before the cemeteries.

New Alamein & the North Coast
White sand, clear water, and a new city built for summer.
New Alamein is a new city on the shore, with high-rise towers, hotels, beaches and marinas. It anchors the North Coast, the stretch of Mediterranean resorts that fills with Egyptian holidaymakers in July and August.
For a visit centred on the memorials, a day from Alexandria is enough. For clients who also want the beach, a night or two on the coast turns it into a stay.
